The Shaker Museum and Library was the first institution devoted to Shaker history and is the premier center for the interpretation and exhibition of Shaker life and culture.  The collections of the Shaker Museum and Library include Shaker furniture, oval boxes, textiles, machinery, art, products, and tools. The Library holds a host of archival materials including books, manuscripts, and historic pictures.

Mount Lebanon Shaker Village was the center of Shaker culture in America from 1787 to 1947.  The Museum purchased the North Family at Mount Lebanon in 2004, and is now in transition, restoring the North Family and relocating public museum programs to this National Historic Landmark.  The World Monuments Fund included the site in 2004 and 2006 on its Watch List of the 100 most significant endangered historic sites in the world, stating that the Museum and the Mount Lebanon buildings together will provide "an unparalleled resource for the study of the American Shaker movement, an important and fascinating aspect of American cultural, religious and material history."
